New Vacancy – Technical Specialist (UK Aid Direct)


As part of our expansion, we are looking to strengthen our UK Aid Direct fund management team by recruiting a Technical Specialist on a 6 month fixed term contract to work closely alongside the Technical Lead. The role will provide support to the UK Aid Direct team, working closely with the Technical Lead on areas of technical relevance, ensuring grant performance and risk are proactively managed, evaluated and improved.


  1. Provide oversight and quality assurance of the annual review and project completion reports and process
  2. Work with Performance and Risk Managers and technical partners to develop technical guidance to grant holders on areas for improvement and change within existing interventions, and develop resources to support learning, monitoring and evaluating the progress of individual grant holders as per their commitments.
  3. Provide solutions to technical issues identified through the annual review and project completion process, including identifying relevant technical assistance, writing ToRs and overseeing consultant and strategic advisory input where necessary.
  4. Directing and contributing to technical partners inputs on logframe and ongoing project reviews to support the improved technical delivery of grant holder interventions.
  5. Support the pre-contracting technical development of new proposals
  6. Identifying common learning both within and external to the fund, promoting use of best practice to grant holders and drawing out fund specific learning to feed into wider sector policy dialogue.
  7. Strengthening the monitoring and evaluation strategy of the fund and developing strategies to collect and analyse fund logframe data, build the results framework and communicate results and impact.
  8. Collaborate with Performance and Risk Managers to identify topic areas for Reference Group meetings and webinars based on feedback from grant holders and technical partners
  9. Develop learning products, working with the Technical Specialist in the Learning Unit, around MannionDaniels’ work, with a focus on the work of UK Aid Direct
  10. Identify and contribute to lessons learning and knowledge sharing among grant holders.
  11. Coordinate with the technical lead and the communications team on developing themes and approaches for dialogue and follow up with grant holders, including webinars, reference group and Facebook discussions.



  • Qualified to a Master’s degree in International Development, Policy and Planning, M&E or a related field,
  • Minimum 3 years’ experience of working within grant management including providing technical support to grant holders as part of multi grant holder programmes or funds and working with donors or multilaterals
  • Experience and good understanding of the UK government’s overseas development strategies.
  • Have experience of working directly with or as part of, civil society, and of working in sub-Saharan Africa and/or South Asia
  • Show proven ability to manage and build excellent relations and collaboration with technical partners and donors.
  • Good understanding of monitoring and evaluation reporting techniques
  • Good familiarity with Microsoft Office and online management systems
  • Proven ability to operate in a team environment liaising with diverse teams
  • Ability to manage a varied workload and prioritise tasks, work under pressure and meet deadlines
  • Experience of using own initiative, with a proactive and problem solving attitude


  • Experience living and working in one or more developing countries.
  • In-depth knowledge and experience of DFID and other international organisations’ policy, processes and procedures, especially at country level and including the ability to interact with agency staff constructively and assertively.
  • Working languages in addition to English
