World Immunisation Week 2025 and the role Civil Society Organisations (CSOs) can play in increasing immunisation coverage

Posted:

Immunisation saves lives and protects people’s health. This World Immunisation Week 2025 we reflect on the role CSOs can play in increasing immunisation coverage, through the work MannionDaniels has undertaken with Gavi, the Vaccine Alliance.

In December 2021, the Gavi Board approved a new Civil Society and Community Engagement (CSCE) approach. At the core is the goal to catalyse and strengthen strategic partnerships between governments and CSOs to accelerate progress on delivering life-saving vaccines to every last child and adult who needs them.

The Gavi Board recommended that 10% of combined health system strengthening (HSS), Equity Accelerator Fund (EAF) and Targeted Country Assistance (TCA) grants should be used for CSO implementation. Gavi contracted MannionDaniels with Oxford Policy Management (OPM) in a consortium, to launch a series of opportunities for CSOs to apply for funding from Gavi.

These include country-specific calls for proposals, alongside single-source funding driven by countries and approved by governments. This approach reflects a wider commitment from governments to endorse the role of CSOs in extending immunisation services to reach all communities.

A diverse range of mainly national and local CSOs are already, and will be, implementing vaccination projects focused on increasing demand generation, community engagement, and service delivery. And the impact so far is exciting. To date we have launched nine calls for proposals, 11 grants are live and US$ 1,386,148 has been disbursed to CSOs. See the impact infographic below.
